La mission
EDF Research and Development has a team dedicated to nuclear technology research and to the development of numerical methods and tools that support the safe and reliable operation of the UK nuclear fleet. Within the UK R&D Centre, the NucTeC Thermal Hydraulics group develops and applies modelling capabilities for reactor systems and components, working with experts across EDF R&D and EDF UK. With this V.I.E., EDF wishes to strengthen the links and cooperation between France and the UK on thermal-hydraulics modelling methods for pressurised water reactor steam generators. The role will contribute to the exchange of good practice, tools and technical knowledge across EDF Group, while building sustainable capability for EDF UK applications. The UK nuclear landscape is complex, with EDF supporting the long-term operation of Sizewell B, the delivery of new nuclear projects and the development of engineering capabilities for future needs. In this context, the UK Centre is developing advanced numerical studies using a range of thermal-hydraulics approaches. These methods can be used to investigate steam-generator flow and heat-transfer behaviour, understand plant-relevant phenomena, and provide evidence for engineering assessments. The mission of the V.I.E. will be to develop and apply numerical methods relating to EDF UK PWR steam generators and to integrate relevant best practice from across EDF Group. The main activities will include: • Defining steam-generator modelling use cases and the technical requirements for assessment tools • Developing simplified modelling methods and repeatable workflows for plant-relevant steam-generator analyses • Assessing the performance and limitations of simplified approaches against detailed analysis • Performing simplified sensitivity, uncertainty, verification and validation studies. The V.I.E. will join the NucTeC Thermal Hydraulics group within EDF R&D UK. They will be supervised by EDF R&D UK and will benefit from collaboration with specialists from EDF R&D and EDF UK.
